First finished painting for the New Year is Oliver Sykes of Bring Me The Horizon. This one is inspired by his song "Blessed with a Curse" . In mixed media style, this 10 x 15 painting has acrylic, oils, blood splashes and tar gel applied. I splashed so much blood around I'm still finding it all over my studio. I'll be uploading a step by step video of how I achieved these effects soon. In the meantime, here's the final outcome.
Deathcore Metalcore Screamo, he inspires controversy and all the alternative magazine editors these days.
Memorable quote by Oli himself: "My hair is better than anyone's. That’s the only reason we started the band. Cuz like I can’t sing at all but their all like “Look at his hair… look at his hair!” Look but don’t touch. I said that to them. I said it straight away, look but don’t touch. I had to keep spanking hands, it was dreadful. But in the end they learned the rules that I go by. And now were selling thousands of records”.

Cindy, wonderful portrait, so much personality and feeling. I can't imagine splashing blood around the studio. What happens when it turns brown on the painting? Will it affect color or composition? Just wondering .... not that I'd ever paint with blood : )
I thought about using real blood for maybe 10 seconds, but realized I would need way too much of it. It would turn brownish. So I tried to mix a color as close as I could get, maybe a bit less brown - of thin watery acrylic. That was the first layer in the background.
As I got to doing the blood framing his face it was more symbolic of fresh blood, that's where I added the tar gel for a 3D effect.
It was a fun experiment, but messy since I couldn't control exactly where the "blood" splatted. I covered his face when I did it, should have covered my floor better!
